The French national team was far from being in the most difficult group – the team opposed Denmark, Australia and Tunisia. In two rounds they confidently defeated Australia (4-1) and Denmark (2-1).
In the last round of the group stage, they allowed themselves to relax and play far from the main squad – Tunisia took advantage of this and won (0-1), but this did not help the team qualify for the playoffs.
In the 1/8 finals, France met with Poland. The struggle, as such, did not work out – the French got a (2-1) victory very easily and advanced to the next round.
A more difficult game turned out to be in a duel with England in the quarter-finals. The team won the first half, let England bounce back in the second half, then took the lead again. The English could have taken the match to extra time, but Harry Kane missed the penalty.
The Moroccan national team was in the same group with Croatia, Belgium and Canada. In such a company, the team was definitely not a clear contender for the playoffs, but in the first round it drew against Croatia (0-0).
In the second round, the Moroccans sensationally defeated (2-0) Belgium, coming close to the playoffs. In the last round, they beat Canada with a score (2-1).
In the 1/8 finals, the Moroccan team met with Spain, in the confrontation with which they were considered an obvious outsider. However, the Moroccans imposed their game on the opponent and got to the penalty shootout, where they were stronger.
In the quarterfinals, the Moroccan team created another sensation – having realized their moment in the first half, the Moroccans kept a minimal victory (1-0) over Portugal.
Players to watch
Kylian Mbappé is currently leading the Golden Boot competition at this World Cup, having scored five goals and scoring decisive doubles in two of his last four matches.
Ashraf Hakimi produced one of the tournament’s highlights by scoring a penalty to knock Spain out, but his focus will now be on defense.
